Building a stronger website

Montgomery Homes is a family owned and operated building company established in Newcastle almost 30 years ago. Montgomery Homes has been building beautiful homes in Newcastle, Sydney, the Central Coast and the Hunter for more than 30 years across sloping, level and narrow sites. Their honest and approachable team offers exceptional customer service that sets them apart from other builders. Their whole team is committed to building excellence from start to finish.

In 2016 Montgomery Homes briefed Engineroom on refreshing their brand identity, while preserving their reputation as a quality builder with a long-standing, reliable, and successful history. A large part of the refresh at this time was a significant update of the Montgomery Homes website. The old website was a goldmine of useful information for clients, however navigating to the information was not easy. With Montgomery’s honest and approachable values we wanted to make the information as accessible as possible.

Since the initial rebuild of the site in 2016, we have continued to work closely with Montgomery’s Marketing and Digital Management team on updating the website, improving the sites user experience, content and to ensure they are up-to date with all the latest building trends, technology and website features.

Another overhaul of the website was undertaken in 2020 to once again modernise the overall look and feel of the site and add new features and functionality to not only simplify how prospective clients can access information, but also make even more content available to allow users to further understand the Montgomery Homes designs and overall offering.

Home design pages have been given a comprehensive filtering system allowing users who know what they're looking for to filter directly to the home designs that would best suit them, or for users that would rather browse to take a more organic approach to search and discovery.

The 3 key areas of The Montgomery Homes website that showcase their homes are the Home Designs, Display Homes and House and Land Package pages. We wanted each page to have a consistent look to allow the user to become familiar with the Montgomery Homes information system, yet make sure the key features for each individual category were clearly visible, engaging and easy to filter between.

The House and Land Properties were integrated with a third party real estate software. This allowed one upload to be pushed to multiple sites including; realestate.com.au, domain.com and the Montgomery Homes website, thus saving the client time on repetitive manual data upload to all 3 sites.

As part of the 2020 refresh we worked a lot with Montgomery’s Marketing and Digital Manager to clearly show the flexibility and options that exist within the floor plans of each home design. Particularly features like; different sized floor plans depending on the square metre of the house and size of your block, flipped floorpan options depending on your block outlook and alternative floor plan layouts to suit different family needs and models.

From experience, we know that the floor plan of a home is an essential part of the purchase decision for any new home buyer, so we wanted to display all of this relevant information, images and measurements in one succinct easy to navigate panel. We have made this panel shareable via email and social media so that customers can review the key information at another time with friends and family to further improve the customer experience across the site.

For those who are still tossing up between designs, we implemented a “Compare” and “Favourite” feature, this functionality is common on many e-commerce websites and has become second nature for users when making purchase decisions online. We wanted to tap-in to this existing behaviour and make it even easier for users to compare different designs and floorpans at a glance across the website.

As the Montgomery Homes website is extremely content rich, we wanted to create a menu that was not only easy to navigate and find exactly what users are looking for, but also allowed for topical content, exciting brand partnerships or new designs to be promoted visually within the menu system. We simplified what could have been a complex “spiderweb” menu into clear sections, breaking down the most relevant topics/links within each category. This allowed the site to feel less overwhelming for the user made finding and accessing relevant content easy and quick.

Visualiser

As a separate project we also built a stand alone visualiser that allows home builders to choose from Montgomery Homes' popular facades and customise colours and external materials (as per Montgomerys selection guide) to bring their new home to life.

The visualiser includes suggested colour schemes, or allows the user to design their own colour scheme from scratch. It is also able to keep a summary of your choices, for future reference or to bring these along to your selections appointment with a Montgomery Homes designer.
